CHERRY PIE
Cherry Pie had struggled with severe laminitis for 12 years. Cherry Pie is now recovering beautifully after 2 months on Lisa’s Program.
Cherry Pie is a 22-year-old Personal Pony who has had severe chronic founder for over 12 years. In about February or March 2010, the farrier discovered a seroma (fluid filled pocket) under the coffin bone in Cherry Pie’s left front foot. X-rays of both feet showed her coffin bones had sunk and they were a few millimeters from coming through the bottom of her soles. The veterinarian told me there was nothing more I could do for Cherry Pie. The coffin bone sinking was the end result of over a decade of severe chronic founder. Her coffin bones had rotated so far that they were literally pointing in the direction of her tail. None of the equine professionals who looked at her x-rays had ever seen coffin bone rotation that severe.
I listened to the veterinarian and then I looked at Cherry Pie. Most of the time she was still standing on all four feet, her eyes were bright, and she was still eating and interacting with her pony friends. I knew she was in some pain but she didn’t look like a pony who was ready to give up. I knew I wasn’t about to give up if Cherry Pie didn’t want to give up!
I started her on Lisa St. John’s vegetable/fruit and organic herb diet. As a retired physician, I was skeptical about whether or not it would work but Cherry Pie and I had run out of options at that point. About two months later, a repeat x-ray was taken. It showed at least one inch (I really mean ONE FULL INCH) of sole thickness. The veterinarian couldn’t explain the change. I have continued her on the vege/fruit and organic herb diet. During the last farrier visit in November 2010, the farrier said her hooves actually had normal angles for the first time in many years. Also for the first time in 12 years, her soles have a healthy color and consistency. Best of all, this autumn, just as Lisa St. John predicted, I was able to let Cherry Pie graze on grass for short periods of time without having her laminitis flare up. Before switching to Lisa St. John’s equine diet, Cherry Pie couldn’t even graze for 5 minutes without her laminitis flaring up. She had been in a dry lot for many years. Needless to say, Cherry Pie is one happy pony and I am one happy human!
I would be happy to serve as a resource/reference person for people who want to hear more about the dietary success stories on my farm.
Blessings,
Roby Rogers
